fundraising event

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

we would like to have a fund raising for a school in Solomon Island, event by swimming 100-200 km across certain island in Solomon islands, does anyone know which route is best to cross.

You would need to be far more specific than this. What part of the Solomons are you talking about?

1

And have you considered sharks and crocodiles?

2

Ozzie beat me to it. Yikes, a rather dicey proposition, IMO.

3

Troll and a stupid one.

4

You could swim down the Lau Lagoon - but I think it is only 50km. Protected by reef, and there aren't any crocs (I think they ate them all), and the sharks are all tame because they are the ancestors of the locals.
And there are plenty of schools there that could use money, eg Lilifia.

ROFL Ozzie: crocs are tame if you are a local - as was quickly pointed out to me on a canoe trip to Laulasi when I put my hand in the water, and also during a swim in the lagoon in Malu'u. All said with big grins, of course. I was seriously warned off swimming to Kiambe Island off Munda, though, as there had been recent sightings of a croc in that channel, and sharks.

wow....thanks alot guys!! we're thinking 'bout it!!

10

im interested when you mention there are lots schools needed to be helped out there, can you please give us more description about it. means the address, or any pictures, description?
Thanks B4hand

anyway, is there anyone can advise us, where's the cheapest place to stay in Honiara, as we're planning to visit it regarding our fundraising program, around in the end of this month?
thx

The schools in the area are so poor, they don't have mailing addresses, or or a mail service, or even electricity. Many don't have permanent lock-up buildings.
Meanwhile, I would not attempt to swim far in Iron Bottom Sound off Honiara, as I have seen the crocs with my own eyes.
As for accommodation, one of the most reasonable (and recommended, which some cheap places definitely are not) is Chester Rest House (mbhches@solomon.com.sb)

ugh.. thanks a bunch mate.. !!! could you please be more specific of what city / village they are on? what' are the school name?

The only place in the entire Solomon Islands that could remotely pass as a city is Honiara, which is roughly the size of Dubbo, Orange or Lismore in Australia. (I gather form your website you are Australian.)
The Lau Lagoon, and Lilifia school which serves part of it, are in the northern region of Malaita Island, the largest and most populous island in Malaita province, and also the most populous island in the whole country, with the highest birth rate.
