Getting to Makira

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

Hi folks,
We are about to move to a village on Makira in the Sollies for 6months on a volunteer program. Wondering if anyone has had experience travelling by boat from Honiara to Makira on the supply ship. I hear it can take a few days but cant confirm (though I suspect it's variable). Oh, and any feedback on travelling through Makira greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

Hi, dhunter, do you have any more details on exactly where in Makira?
I have travelled to the Arosi district as well as Santa Ana, and Waimapuru and Pamua schools, as well as having a pretty good knowledge of the country in general.
The ship from Honiara takes about 24 hours (barring breakdowns, which happened to friends travelling there last time I went). Generally, Solomons transport is improving. You also have the plane option to Kira Kira or Santa Ana, as well as Ulawa (part of the same province). Many rural areas can be accessed from one of these by outboard.
Please feel free ot PM me.
