getting to the solomon islands ???

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

hi there, could anyone out there please give me a little info. on the best way to get to the solomons from england... would love to go asap and am travelling with surfboards .... thanks

Most flights into Honiara are out of Brisbane Australia. There is also one flight a week from Port Moresby, and one a week from Nadi (Fiji) via Port Vila Vanuatu.
Check the Solomon Airlines website and Pacific Blue to check flight times and fares out of Brisbane.
Be careful what currency you are quoted: $1 AUD= $5+ SBD

Both airlines have a 20kg standard luggage limit, but both carrysurfboards to Honiara regularly.

Where in Solomon Islands are you planning to surf?

From Europe, going via Brisbane is definitely going to be the cheapest way.

When shopping for a ticket, note that it might well be cheaper to buy a regular ticket only as far as Brisbane, then book the Brisbane-Honiara leg online with Pacific Blue, which is a budget airline so its fares would probably not be offered to you by a travel agent.
However as you want to go ASAP, you may not get Pacific Blue's better fares already.

Current Solomon Airlines fares return Brisbane Honiara are just under $800, for the period over Christmas. They can be cheaper, if you go at a less popular time. Pacific Blue are the same whether you book one way or return, but Solomon Airlines are cheaper if you book the return. Note, Solomon Airlines include free food and a wine or Solbrew beer.
(I am travelling Solomon Airlines this time as they travel on the day I need to arrive, Pacific Blue only fly Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I need to arrive on Sunday.)
Note, you will need a return or onward ticket, or they won't let you fly out of Brisbane.

I forgot to say, I agree with Laszlo about booking the Brisbane Honiara leg online separately.

4

They seem to be code-sharing with Solomon Airlines. One flight a week (or maybe two) goes on to Nauru.

5

OG, any recent info on Our Airline's flights?
Are they really happening, and reliably?

6

The fact that they are codesharing probably makes their flight more viable and reliable. Thanks for the info.

7

If you book during the month of November with Solomon Airlines the fare is only $499.00 return from Brisbane. which is about $400.00 cheaper than usual. Not sure if they will let you book for December though but it's worth a try.

if you fly Brisbane-Honiara by pacific blue it is cheaper, but you have to spend a night in Brisbane. Flying with Solomon Airlines has the advantage you can book your luggage from Europe direct to Honiara (HIR). Many airlines (e.g. Qantas, Emirates) arrive early morning from Europe at Brisbane and connect conveniently with Solomon Airlines.

My Pacific Blue flight left Brisbane mid-morning, too. However, you would need to collect your luggage and re-check it.
