Giant Eels

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

Does anyone know when is the best time for seeing the giant tame eels in Biche Village, Gatokae, Marovo Island in the Solomon Islands?

I plan to be there in two months.

Thanks for any feedback

I know nothing about eels, but a google search indicates that the Wilderness Lodge would be the best place to enquire from.

Any time is more than likely OK. They are fascinating creatures.

Eels spend the majority of their lives (usually years and sometimes decades) in fresh water. They are born at sea then migrate to fresh water where they stay for years. Then they travel to their salt water spawning grounds to reproduce and then die. Sort of the opposite life cycle of salmon which are born and return to fraesh water but spend most of their lives at sea.

Some eels live to be over 20 years old before the spawn. It is beleived that the giant eels of New Zealand spawn near Tonga. The Saragasso Sea is another suspected spawning area for many North American and European eels. Most of their spawning activity is a mystery to man.

The eels can be seen in Biche pretty much all year round. It's a good hike from Wilderness Lodge (Peava village) or you can get taken by boat. Overnight accommodation possible, low-key village style

You sound like an eel expert - are you?

I love eels too, and while in New Ireland in Papua New Guinea, I saw some huge eels on the east coast.

Do you have anymore eel stories?
