Guadalcanal floods

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

A warning to anyone travelling to Solomon Islands in the next couple of months:
Guadalcanal has suffered severe flooding in the last week or so, and the main north-west road has been cut in at least 7 places. It may take 6 months to repair completely. The devastation has been directly attributed to logging in the high country of Guadalcanal.
There is more bad weather predicted across the country for the next 2-3 months.
If you are planning to travel there, check conditions in Honiara, before leaving the capital.

Thanks for this warning - I am due to travel to Honiara on 20 March for 5 weeks. I will be travelling to northern Guadalcanal so this is very helpful. Do you know where in Honiara I can check the conditions of the roads? And is it possible ot get a road map anywhere?
thanks again

There is only one road, running roughly East-West on either side of Honiara. There are some tracks leading to village areas. Honiara itself has a maze of roads up the ridges and in some valleys, all leading to residential areas, and very confusing. There is no such thing as a road map, though you can get island maps from one of the Government ministries.
I guess the only way you could find out road conditions is to ask at the Central Police Station.
I understand there have been some road repairs, but the current weather pattern means that at any time the road could be cut. There may be little warning, except watch out for sustained heavy rain.
Do you know where in Guadalcanal you will be going?
(Feel free to send me a PM with more details). I am hoping to be in Solomon Islands for part of the time you will be there.

Hi Ozziegiraffe
I'm a newbie to Thorn Tree and couldn't work out how to PM you :-(
Not even sure of my itinerary yet - other than I will be visiting schools outside Honiara. It would be good to have a contact there.

Alison, if you click on my User Name (ie the blue Ozziegiraffe, in the column on the left), you can send me a message, and I can send you more details.
Alternatively, go to the internet address under my messages, and go to Village stays or Malaita, and then Lau village stay, and you will find my email. I am reluctant to post it openly.
I was a teacher in Solomon Islands for 4 year, and have loads of local teacher friends, and quite a few in the Ministry of Education.
