Is there a boat from Honiara to Gizo (Solomon Islands) on Fridays?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

Hi everyone,

Myself and three friends are travelling to the Solomon Islands in May. We have booked a flight with Virgin Australia into Honiara on a Thursday afternoon. I have spoken with some people about getting away from Honiara on the Friday as we don't want to stay there for more than one night, and leaving on the Thursday night would be even better!

I've been told that the only boat from Honiara to Gizo goes on Sunday... and that our only real option to get out of Honiara on a Thursday or Friday is on a flight, which costs $500!!! We can't afford this, so I am wondering if anyone knows of any boat company, freighters, fishermen, locals, anyone who may be heading to Gizo by boat on a Thursday/Friday that we could travel with?

Hope someone out there can help us!

Thanks.

Markos

There are occasional boats travelling to Gizo on other days, but the only scheduled one leaves early Sunday morning. Planes leave every day. You could walk along the wharf and enquire about boats, but I don't like your chances. Honiara is functioning fairly normally after the floods. (I left there yesterday), so is not bad for a few days. If you want to go elsewhere, consider a night or two on Savo, Gela (Tulagi, Maravagi, etc.) or Auki/Langa Langa.
