Mobile (cell) phone coverage in Marovo Lagoon

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

I'm heading off to the Solomons at the end of the week for holidays, but I've just been offered a job interview (via phone) during the time I'll be staying at Matakuri Lodge, on the SW corner of Vangunu Island.

I can't find a decent coverage map for SI. I know that they have Breeze and, I believe, Digicel. Can anyone confirm if there is mobile phone coverage in this area - or in Seghe ?

Thanks

No Digicel, they didn't get the contract - it was awarded to an obscure company called bemobile, and won't start before April.
At present there is only the very unreliable Solomon Telekom. They have had NO SIM cards available for sale for at least the last month, so your only option, even if there is coverage, is Global Roaming (they have agreements with Telstra in Australia, and a few other companies).
Before my recent one month stay, I took 2 weeks even to connect to a friend's mobile in Honiara from Australia, and then was cut off after 3 minutes, and could not reconnect.
So even if your area has coverage, I wouldn't be relying on a mobile for an important interview.
Does the resort have a landline? if so, I would use that number. Otherwise, travel to Gizo or Munda, but use a landline, wherever you are.

Bemobile as in PNG's bemobile ?? Good luck with that !!

I don't think the resort has a phone. Oh well....

PS Thanks for the info, Ozzie.

Currently its almost impossible to call phones even in Honiara itself. Its worst naturally at the peak times but I'm not getting through at all hours of the day. Skype-out (i.e. Skype to phone) is equally useless (and don't bother asking Skype's customer support for help because they obviously train at the same place where travel agents "learn" about the places they book travel). If your interview is really critical, try renting or borrowing a satellite phone but even these may not be reliable in cyclone season and so close to the equator.

I had no trouble calling a Honiara mobile from either Auki or Honiara, using card phones, over the last couple of weeks. However, last April I often couldn't get through on a mobile for a whole day at a time. it is a bit variable, and like Honiara power and water, quite unpredictable.
Incidentally, for the OP, all public phones have numbers and can be called. I picked up a new phone directory while in Honiara, and if you need a number somewhere in the Western Province, I can probably find it for you.

The only option is satalite phone, wilderness lodge ahs one and uipi resort, but still nor 100 percent reliable
