Questions about Solomon Islands Accomodation, Visas, etc.

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

Hi,

I am moving to the Solomon Islands (Honiara) for 5 months. I have been trying to organise some things before I arrive however I have had difficulty finding information. One of the biggest concerns for me has been accommodation. I have potentially booked Sanalae Aparments for the 5 months, however I find it exorbitantly priced compared to where I live currently (Australia) considering what you get (just a small studio). Are all rental properties like this so high priced (the rate is $11,500 SBD/month). I have looked around the forum and noticed there are some previous threads on real estate, however its been awhile since they have been updated.

This is all the result of a last minute internship with the World Health Organization, and all the Rest Houses are booked up as a result of me being there during the Pacific Arts Festival, so no luck there unfortunately.

My next question was about the visa. From what I have read, the grant you a visitor visa for a period of up to 3 months maximum but this can be extended. They also you require you to have a return ticket. My question is then, if you have a return ticket that is past 3 months from your entry will they deny the visa? I have desperately been seeking this information but have had no luck as yet.

I also just had some random questions about things like cell service and internet (which I understand is very high). I know this can be shaky as it is a developing country but I just wanted information if its available.

Thank you to anyone who can provide me with help.

First, if you want to stay in the one place for the whole 5 months, over the time of the arts festival, you will probably have to pay that much rent. The presence of RAMSI in the country has pushed rents sky high. Your other option would be to book Sanalae for the weeks when the Rest Houses are full, and book Rest Houses for the rest of the time. (Chester and St Agnes both have en suite rooms, and communal kitchens).
It would be worth contacting BJS agencies (between the ANZ bank and the wharf) on 23277, email bruce@bjs.com.sb or jmporras@bjs.com.sb about rental property.
WHO should organise a work and residence permit for you. If you have that, you won't need a flight out of the country. You won't be able to work on a 3-month visitors Visa.
There are 2 mobile phone companies Telekom and BeMobile, and I think Telekom still has the monopoly on internet, which is slow and expensive.
Power outlets are the same as Australia - take anything electrical you might want (eg kettle) and they are ridiculously expensive in Honiara. Small appliances are one of my most popular gifts to town dwelling locals when I visit.

Sir,

Great to know you visiting our beautiful country, if WHO is organising your trip - they should have all the documentation ready. However should you require further visa queries dont hesitate to contact us at honiarahomestay as we assist visitors with visa for a fee and the turnaround is about a week at the minimum.

As oziegiraffe mention rates for rentals are high - but if you want something that is affordable at a lower rate and you are willing to rent a room - for the 5 months yet with basic kitchen/toilet shower facilities honiarahomestay can organise for you at affordable rate. Please contact us on our email honiarahomestay@gmail.com

I will be happy to assist to make bookings for you too as part of our service to potential visitors.. I have previously assisted renowned film groups like the BBC and also SBS from Korea so have very strong connections that comes handy in such matters.
