Quick hop to the SolomonsCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands
Hello... I have a few extra days in Brisbane/Cairns at the end of my Australia trip so I was wondering if I could just hop over to the Solomons and check them out. I have 4 extra days. I'm not a diver so mostly looking for a scenic area (islands/ lagoons) to spend time in. Have been reading up and obviously looks like the best idea is to head out of Honiara - but where and how? Thanks
In theory, the answer would be Western Province. In practice, it might be a bit risky if you have only 4 days - your flight back to Honiara copuld be delayed, cancelled, whatever... No better idea from me - I can't think of anywhere you could access without flying in 4 days RT, and the flights can be a hit or miss. | 1
There are several places in Central and Guadalcanal provinces that may meet your needs. Maravagi (in Gela, sometimes called the Florida Islands) is good for a few days, and has wonderful snorkelling, and you can pay them to take you to local villages. The only drawback - you can't cook and the food they provide , although good, is expensive by island standards, and not included in the price quoted. They only accept cash, so make sure you have enough (I needed to get more when they took us back to Honiara, as I ahdn't allowed enough for food). They provide their own transport from Honiara, about 2 hours by boat. | 2
