Shortlands

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

Hi, I am planning to cross over to the Shortlands from PNG next week, spend a few days there and then head onwards to Gizo. I have read up on the PNG to Solomons crossing/immigration topic, now looking for more information on the Shortlands themselves.

I am interested to see WW2 relics and if possible, go for some snorkeling. For the former, it seems Balalae/Faisi/Poporang are good bets. Anyone tried to go snorkeling and found some great spots?

Also wondering what would be a good base / guesthouse in the Shortlands? Any recommendations?

Thanks!

best base is Nila, on Poporang Island site of catholic mission, church and hospital. There Dominican sisters offer accommodation on Airbnb. The catholic parish priest may offer advise.
Nila is good place to meet Shortland islanders from other outlying islands during Sunday church service.
On Nila pier there is an American plane sunken in low depth. Opposite from Nila on Alu Island other side of Shortland habour there are in low water Japanese water planes, which were sunken on the mooring piers. Somewhere in the hills behind Nila are Japanese artillerie pieces. Nila itself has Japanese bunkers.

Thanks, will try Nila then!
