Traveller warning: Solomon Islands exercise extreme caution

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Solomon Islands

Post-flooding disaster zones declared in Honiara and Guadalcanal province.

For more information see your government travel advisories. Below is a link to the UK one.

Aid workers are on the ground assessing the situation and doing what they can to help avoid the spread of disease and begin the clean-up operations.

I am heading to Honiara for a couple of days on Tuesday with aid donations. Will post here on current conditions when I return.

I'm sure travellers planning to go would appreciate any advice you have on how things are on the ground. I hope the earthquake yesterday hasnt had too much of an impact.

Thanks for keeping the forum updated Ozziegiraffe.

Honiara is up and running fairly normally after the recent flood and earthquakes. Travelling east to west or west to east over the Chinatown bridge requires patience, as the usual traffic jam has multiplied after the loss of the old bridge.
Travelling west or east on Guadalcanal is not recommended yet, as several bridges are out. However, travel by boat or plane to other provinces is back to normal. Solomon Islanders are amazingly resilient. If you have a good sense of balance, you could try out the improvised ferry that local boys have out in place where the old bridge was.
