Airport transfer Nuku Hiva

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

My guesthouse offers me pick up from the airport to Taiohae for 3000 francs per person (we are two, so it's 6000 in total).

Should I accept that? How is the situation in Nuku Hiva airport? Can you find taxis? Are there locals to hitchhike with a contribution in money?

Usually I would just refuse the transfer and see what I can find there, because I hate when airport transfers charge per person, it makes no sense to me from a business perspective. But Nuku Hiva airport seems so remote, maybe this is a speciak case in which we would end up paying more without the transfer?

Thanks

I was replying to a private message about this, and the answer became large, I think it might be useful to share here.

There is only one fixed price, 3000 francs per person one way. End of the story. It's impossible, really impossible to find anything else, because the airport is on the other side of the island and nobody lives there. Only taxi drivers go there, and only in concomitance with flights, so there are no local people to hitchhike. It doesn't matter if you book it in advance, the price is still 3000 francs per person.

If somebody asks you for more than 3000 francs, please tell him / her to go to hell also from me. On our way back the lady who drove us asked for 4000 francs, smiling; and when we asked her why the price was different than the standard she said, "woohoo, I don't know, I felt in the mood of asking more". She didn't realise how much that money was for us.

In French Polynesia, unfortunately, most people involved in tourism are crazy sick and don't realise the value of money. The few people involved in tourism, who do realise the value of money, are French who try to take advantage of the situation and overprice everything. If you try to escape from all these annoying people, and get in touch with real locals, you'll have the best time of your life.

In Nuku Hiva we found this amazing family who hosted us, filled us with food, and showed us how to reach interesting places, all at non touristic prices: https://www.facebook.com/tehaenukumaikakuheihouse. I strongly suggest to get in touch with them; we got to know all other guest houses in the island, they all rip off guests overpricing every little thing they do, tours, food, room rates.

Sorry for the strong concept, but it has been so painful, as a non-rich person, to organise a long and exhaustive trip in French Polynesia: those words really come from my heart. I repeat, people not involved in tourism (which include many people who advertise on Airbnb lately) are amazing, try to get in touch only with them.
