another suggestions on itinerary :-) (14 nights)

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

Hi, my husband and I are planning a trip to French Polynesia next September. We are considering this itinerary, but I am not sure and open to suggestions as we do not know which island to pick. As a photo buff, I'd probably enjoy some beautiful scenery, nature, mountains etc.

Tahiti - 2 nights (planning an interior island safari and walking tour in Papeete)

Moorea - 4 nights (trip around the island, lagoon cruise)

Raiatea - 3 nights (Faaroa river kayak tour, circle island tour and swimming on Motu Iriru)

Bora Bora - 5 nights (circle tour, shark feeding) - one day trip to Maupiti!

We were not sure between Raiatea or Huahine instead....I just tought that Faarao river can offer great photo opportunities and it is a different experience to all previous islands and excursions (?)

So this is our second itinerary:

Tahiti - 2 nights
Moorea - 4 nights
Huahine - 3 nights
Bora Bora - 5 nights and a day trip to Raiatea (instead of Maupiti/or with a trip to Maupiti too)

Raiatea was my favorite island in FP.....I think because of all the agriculture going on there and because of Taputapuatea which is important throughout Polynesia., and because it has a really nice little town. Have not been to Huahine to give any sort of comparison.

Hi there,

my partner and me just came back from French Polynesia last Sunday and we had an amazing time. We went to Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa for 1 week and had an amazing time since it was away from the usual tourist tracks.
After that we spend 5 nights on Huahine and I must say it is the most beautiful island I have ever been to ( and I visited quite a few of the other Pacific Islands before). We stayed at Randesshack, in a self contained house, 30 m away from the beach and it was unbelievably beautiful. The water is so blue and shows so many different shades of blue, incredible. There is a reef around the island but it is smaller compared to Raiateas/ Tahaas Reef.
After Huahine we went to Raiatea and I was unfortunately a bit disappointed. The island is much bigger than Huahine and you definitely need a car to get around and do anything. We did a day tour to Tahaa which was beautiful and you can see Bora Bora very close by (Bora Bora can even be seen from Huahine)
As I mentioned the reef around Raiatea is huge so it is hard to spot the open ocean, which was a shame since whales are crossing the area as we were on Huahine, where we could spot them. Unfortunately it was not possible from Raiatea. I also think the swimming and snorkeling spots are better on Huahine. In saying that I must admit that we had the best snorkeling of our life around Tahaa, but you need to take a tour in order to get there.
I would suggest, definitely go to Huahine and maybe cut a day or two in Bora Bora (we haven't been there), which is full of tourists and very expensive anyways, and take a further stop in Raiatea for 2 or 3 nights.
Hope that helps you :-)

My wife and I went last March for about 2 weeks for our honeymoon. We did one night in Tahiti (our flight landed at 11 pm), 4 nights in Moorea, 3 nights in Huahine, and 4 nights in Bora Bora. Sure, I would have loved to have visited the Marquesas or the Tuamotus, but our budget didn't extend that far. We really enjoyed the true Polynesia culture found in Huahine. This is something that you absolutely miss out on while on Bora Bora (not that we didn't love that too!). Moorea had the best activities of the group, but like I said, there are many islands to explore. Enjoy!
