Are rental cars in Tahiti relatively safe from break-ins?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

Hello,

My wife & I have one day in Tahiti between islands, and given our short time figure that we could rent a car to make it more feasible to hotel away from the busier cities, plus take us to a hike or beach the next day. Here's the question: if we park it at a trailhead or beach, how safe is it from break-ins? My first choice would be to rent the smallest hatchback, but then any luggage in the car is more visible. Second choice is to rent a larger sedan-like car with a enclosed trunk.

Last year we were victims of a window smash & grab from a rental car while backwoods for the day, and they didn't take the time to bother the trunk. Of course we'll try to not leave valuables in the car, but sometimes that's a challenge... ie. extra camera lenses.

Also I'm keen to hear your hotel suggestions that are a little more away from the busy areas.

Thanks! Ralph

We rented a car while in Tahiti - it was a number of years ago but at that time I don't recall any concerns about break ins or thefts from rentals. You can probably get more up to date information from the forum at tahiti-explorer.com - there were a number of locals posting when we were looking for information.

I can recommend Relais Fenua as a place to stay - about 30-40 minutes from Papetee in a residential area. The manager there arranged our car rental for us.

We rented a car on Tahiti and also Bora Bora without problems.

On Bora Bora, i walked up to the grass hut where the Avis desk is and asked if there were any cars available. The large lady in the bright flowery dress said simply "No". She turned around to do some work, finishing the conversation.

I thought for a second, as asked,"Will a car become available today?"

The lady replied, "In a half hour".

Pacific Island time....
