Atoll or not at all?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

I will be in French Polynesia for two weeks in January/February next year and have been looking at the logistics and costs of visiting one of the Tuamotu atolls. A few questions: is it worth the effort and cost (return air fare from Tahiti is around €340pp)? And if so, which atoll should we choose given that neither my partner nor I dive (but do snorkel)? If we do go, how long should we stay? And, finally, any recommendations regarding inexpensive but magnificently located accommodation?

Hi
I have been to Rangiroa, Tikehau, Fakarava and Mataiva
and
YES

it is worth the effort. I have been to Fiji and Vanuatu and Seychelles but they didnt impress me like those atolls did. Of course it depends what you like. It is so brightly coloured, so light and so remote it felt as one of the best days in my life and i really travel a lot.
Tikehau is heavenly, Mataiva is, but nothing beats the South Pass Tetamanu of Fakarava. I could die there and still be ok with it. Years after it I still dream about it.
Tokerau village is good and not expensive!

So: YES
