Auckland to Bora bora

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

Hi All,
I'm currently in New Zealand and want to get over to Tahiti and Bora bora, what is the best (i.e cheapest) way of doing this? It'll be around the begining of December...
Thank you!
B

Air New Zealand and Air Tahiti Nui would be your two choices. Air France does not fly to New Zealand. You can get to Tahiti on Air Calin via New Caledonia but I suspect that won't be the cheapest route (though do check it out).

Check the Air New Zealand Web specials on thier Web site. Also sign up for Air Tahiti Nui emails as once in a while they send out deals (at least they do in North America).

I've found deals on Air Tahiti Nui using Expedia so try that as well as other such services.

To get to Bora Bora from Tahiti you would fly on the local airline, Air Tahiti (not Air Tahiti Nui, the international carrier).

Note: December is not the high season. It is in fact the low season due to the high rainfall.

Silvano---are Air NZ and Air Tahiti Nui now doing a codeshare on the AKL/PPT route? I thought that was part of the agreement when Air NZ agreed to skip the Cooks/Tahiti/LAX route, tho not sure.

If so, probably the same deals would be offered on both, as it would be the same plane, perhaps.

This is the press release that ATN issued last October:

"Air Tahiti Nui today announced a reciprocal code share agreement with Air New Zealand to commence April 2, 2007. As part of the agreement, the Kiwi airline will no longer operate between Los Angeles International Airport and Faa’a International Airport in Papeete, Tahiti, opting instead to code share the route with the established French Polynesian carrier. Each carrier will also operate twice-weekly flights between Auckland, New Zealand, and Papeete, Tahiti, providing reciprocal code share capacity on each other’s flights. "

The Saturday and Sunday flights are ANZ and the Wednesday and Friday are ATN.

I saw (and purchased) a codeshare on Alaska Airlines where it was cheaper purchased on the other airline (that was not the actual carrier).

Another post reminded me of the grabaseat specials that ANZ does (from Auckland not yet North America) that sometimes include Tahiti.

#3: Sounds logic but when you check out the airfares, December/January is High or even Peak Season because it is the summer holiday time in Australia and New Zealand. And Xmas holiday in the US and in Europe. The rainfall does not stop people from traveling there. Most people do not know about rainy season and dry season anyway; they assume that Tahiti virtually has sunshine 24/7 all year long, lol.

#5: Every airline included in a code sharing (with Star Alliance often more than just two) has defined seats assigned for sale under their name (number of seats and even seat numbers). And depending how the respective contingent is booked already, you can have real differences regarding how much you pay. I needed to travel with Air New Zealand once from Samoa to LAX. All seats in the cheaper fare categories were booked out at Air NZ; however United still had some and I got a 50% cheaper fare with them. Fortunately I had a travel agent here in Apia with a branch in Pago-Pago (American Samoa) who was able to issue the ticket on United.

Well, that's good to hear wk. I guess the best advice from all is to check each carrier's website, or phone them, you might get a great deal by getting the exact same seat via one carrier and not the other. Pretty strange, when you think about it!
