Best polynesian dances performances in Tahiti

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

Hello,

I will be in Tahiti from January to begining of February and would like to see some Polynesian Dance performances.

Where can I see the best ones ( the ones with more " authentic " touch ) ?

  • In large Hotels such as Intercontinental , Sofitel , Meridien or other 4 or 5 stairs hotels ? And in that case what are the perfomance's day(s) of each hotel ?

  • Can I see also good quality performances in other places at this period of the year ? ( In July they have a fantastic danse
    festival , during the " 14 Juillet " commeration. )

I know that they mostly are tourism oriented dances , but still with some touch of authenticity and that they can be very good ... a excellent way to dream of the lost Paradise.

Thank you for your comments. Best regards.
Louis.

Ia Orana,

I would suggest friday's nights at the Intercontinental Tahiti for The "Grand Ballets" show.

We took in the Saturday night show and buffet at Captain's Bligh's Restaurant (next to the Lagoonarium) and felt the show was excellent. This was in August of 06 and the cast may have changed but we very very impressed by the dancers and the cast of musicians.

We were never a fan of the Hotel performances beside the annual dance contest. The best for us was when we got really close to locals and got invited to live with them. Eventhough they had very humble abodes there welcome was as warm as the Tahitian sun and sand.

They took us around with their boats around the lagoon and sang to us as friends not tourists. Got invited to baptism and saw a real dance and discovered the umbilical cord ritual/superstition!

Wilfred, thanks for taking us to the hidden coral gardens and teaching us to use the old spear fiishing technique. your dad mr Hubert is an amazing man. say Hi to Ariura for me.

Teiva, and Shaq, thanks for singing to us while you show you around the lagoon and at the pullout one evening on the back of your truck over looking the motus in Bora.

Rai, a big thank you for taking care of us at the open deck of the cargo boat while it was raining. you also invited us with your bro-in law Teva. otherwise we wouldve looked weird waiting at the pier at 2AM! thanks also for taking us all the just to see Teahupoo!

Maso and Philippa, my drinking buddies! wouldnet be memorable to us. thanks for trying to pick us up and sorry to hear that you had a flat tire and that your car rolled on your foot! sorry couldne see you at the hospital!

thanks to all the hospitality we received from the kind Tahitians. Vive Te Ao Maohi! Maruru Roa!
