Bora Bora and Moorea - Cheaper/Laid back places to eat and hang out?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

Hi!

My fiance and I are heading to Moorea and Bora Bora for our honeymoon in August. Although we are staying at the higher-end places, but we really like to just hang out at more local spots, experience the culture, and not just have the nicest meal on the island.

I know both places are really expensive, but does anyone have any recommendations for either island for places that are cheaper, more local and fun to hang out at? We are looking for places for dinner and having some drinks....

Thanks so much for helping us find some hidden treasures!
Kim

Moorea:

Les Tipaniers Hotel has a relatively inexpensive restaurant directly at the water - breakfast and lunch only - and good, not too expensive restaurant at the road. The lunch restaurant had local patrons on Sunday.

It looked to me as if the locals buy food in the small supermarkets and eat at home. I was told that there are a few roulottes as well, but I don't know their location.

Tahiti:

In Papeete, the roulottes (evenings only, food carts) and MacDonalds were the two places where I saw lots of locals.

Sorry, I don't know Bora-Bora well enough.
