Bus from airport to Papeete 9pm at night, or other transport suggestions?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

Hi Everyone,

My flight arrives at 9pm midweek to Tahiti International airport. Im a budget traveller so don't want to pay for a cab ($30US+ I heard) to Papeete. My question: is there any busses from the airport to downtown at this time of night? Any other cheap transport options other than taxi? Safety is an issue as im a solo female traveller. Safe to sleep at the airport till morning?

Thanks for the help

I have slept at the airport and probably will again on my next trip. Many people do. Taxis are expensive, the bus runs at night, I'm not sure how late though, but where are you going, because it is hard to find places in Papeete in the day time let alone at night. I don't like walking around late by myself, though I am told it is safe. See if you can find accomadations that include transport.

buses stop at nighttime, so 9 o clock no bus will be running,
you can wait at the airport without problem,
at night there are always drunks along the roads , so dont start walking into the city.
there is a rather filthy place to stay right opposite the airport called FIFIS, belongs to a very fat unfriendly lady
and a more expensive place called airport lodge
and there is one , where i stayed called pension DAMYR, they have one "cheap "bed with mossienet on the terrace behind a wooden wall, nice and very clean in a big garden for 3000FXP, think its 30 euro ,the tel number is 836913 you have to make a reservation, and they can pick you up, the pension belongs to an older very helpful couple.

remember, there is nothing cheap in tahiti!
