Camping on Moorea in Tahiti questions

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

Hi,

I've done some searches in the TT archives for this these questions but nothing turned up, so apologies if these were answered before.

me and my girlfriend will be arriving in Tahiti around the 10th May for 2-3 weeks (depending on funds) after travelling for a few months through South America. We are looking to do it on a budget of around $30-40 a day so we were looking at the camping option. There is some information on the web about camping in Moorea (Moorea Camping, Chez Nelson and Mark's Place) but besides the basic information I can't find anything else.

Can you rent/buy tents there (or close by)? if so how much are they? or do we have to bring our own?
are there are any cooking facilities? if so do they also provide cooking pots/utensils ( a long shot but just though I'd ask) or would we have to buy our own? If we do have to buy is there anywhere nearby that would stock these items?

I've also seen that May is the time of the Billabong Pro at Teahupoo? Does this have any affect on the influx of tourists? Is it harder to get accomodation or would it have no affect elsewhere outside of papeete?

Thanks,
Pat

I seriously doubt that a surfing competition has a major impact on tourism in Moorea. The commute to the contest would be much too inconvenient.

As far as I know, Nelson's also rents cabins which would eliminate the need for a tent.

Camping Nelson and camping Moorea are pratically one beside the other. They are about the same price. Both have a kitchen with a fridge and stove and a few plates and ustensils and I'm pretty sure you can have your own if you give a deposit. There's a grocery close by. Nelson is cleaner than Moorea, but the tent sites are right under the sun at Nelson and under the shade of a huge tree at Moorea Camping. I don't think you can rent a tent in both places, but as someone said before, you can rent a cabin at Nelson.

I stayed at Marks place a few months ago, He also has bungalows and dorms and camping. I don't recall seeing anywhere to buy/rent tents. I also heard good reports about Camping Nelson and its closer to "town" I wanted quiet and was ready to be away from the water so Marks place was fine for me.
