| astilla05:49 UTC15 Jun 2007 | Hi there,
we are thinking about a diving trip for 20 days. It seems expensive but we would like to know if it is possible to find cheaper places (basics bunggalows closed to the beach) with accessible divesites.
Many thanks.

Seems to me at the least you will need all the usual diving support-compressor, water, boat etc-which means a dive shop-or a very expensive hire of dive masters and gear.
In any case the worlds best reef diving is inside the many atolls of the Tuamotus, IMHO. The best web site I know of for all things FP is
here, though it isn't specifically for diving, it lists many dive shops if you poke around it a bit.

Fakarava is also an incredible place (shark, shark, and all kind of fish), and there is one cheap Pension : te mara, (less than 10 minutes walk or 5 minutes bike) from the dive center Unfortunately i do not remember the prices, but they are both in LP. Even if it is cheap according to luxurious hotel, it is still expensive and do not wait for a fantastic place. Anyway over there, you will spend most of your times in the water !
Warning, you have to be a confirmed diver for both divesite mentionned, unless you will not enjoy the dive ! Forget about beaches, as the one in mentionned places do not really exists, but the lagoon worth it !
Diving in French polynesia corresponds more as diving in Asia as in America or Australia : you pay the same price if you have your own equipment or not, and you always go with a boat and divemaster/instructor, all of that is included in your price (+- 70 us$ one dive)
For me, it is one of the most beautiful place for diving in the world (I know philippines, thailand, bali, australia, cook islands, costa rica, florida and egypt).
have fun
