Freight Travel through the Society Islands

Single traveler, first time in this part of the world, three weeks to devote to exploring the Society Islands.

Looking at various ways to go Island Hopping and thought Freight Travel might be fun, less expensive, and not so fancy. Anyone have any suggestions? The other question I have is how feasible is it to be spontaneous and island hope either by boat or plane? Has anyone experience this way of exploring the islands?
