French Polynesia or Cook Islands?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

hi,

We were thinking of taking two weeks off in September, and visting the south Pacific islands. We're tossed between Cook Islands (Roratorua and Aitukai) and French Polynesia (Moorea, Huanini, Maupiti, and Raitiea). Any recommendations? We love scenic beauty, beaches, nature walks, water sports, and just pretty much relaxing. We're not too much into crowds or touristy places (hence I left out Bora Bora and Tahiti). Any advice would be helpful!
Thanks

This gets talked about a lot between the 2 boards. Its a tough pick.

Tahiti itself shouldn't be left out as long as you head for Tahiti-iti, the little round bit attached to the larger round bit that IS Tahiti. Quite laid back, absolutely gorgeous and few people. Most of the tourists I met were local, something like 95% of them were Tahitienne. Bora Bora too has its untouristed charms and is flat ass perfect to boot, regardless of the honeymooners.

Maupiti is one of the bets places I've ever been. If you like snorkelling try one of the Tuamotus. Best I've ever seen and I grew up in Hawaii.

Unless you stay at a budget level Tahiti is rediculously expensive and poor value for what you get, having said that it is spectacular and quite simply one of the most beautifull places on the planet.

The cooks are pleasant and laid back but no where near as stunning as Tahiti, you can stay on the beach on moorea for about $15 a night, its a bargain with fantastic snorkelling.

Go to tahiti if you can, it has more to offer.
