I am looking to go on a honeymoon to Tahiti in December of this year. I am kind of beginning from scratch. I am looking for a villa over the water. Again, I really am starting from nothing. Any advice that you can offer me would be greatly appreciated.
This list has all the fancy resorts with over water bungalows. (They are missing Club Bali Hai in Moorea but that's funky not fancy). I would suggest heading over to the Tahiti Explorer forum as well as the Trip Advisor French Polynesia forum and start reading the threads that interest you. | 1
Congrats on your wedding. What kind of budget are you on? Here is a quick primer: The international airport is near Papeete, Tahiti. Flights often arrive late in the night. I would recommend staying at the airport hotel, which you can see from the terminal. From my own experience, as reservation is highly recommended. I showed up at 1:30 AM and they had sold out. Onward to the Intercontinental Tahiti which has a spectacular view of Moorea, the nearby island. They have overwater bungalows at the IC Tahiti, but you should spend your time in Moorea or Bora Bora. Moorea is the most beautiful island I have ever visited. The high speed ferry only takes 30 minutes. You can also take an 8 minute flight. There are lots of hotels with overwater rooms. I stayed at one of Bali Hai's bay view rooms. The price is an absolute steal, considering the location right in Cook's bay. Their overwater bungalows aren't totally overwater. Very pretty, yes but the water in the bay isn't the light turquoise that you see in the lagoon. For a honeymoon, I would see if you can get a deal at the Hilton Moorea. FYI it used to be called Sheraton, so if you see any reviews you will know it is the same hotel. I'd say the property is the prettiest on the island. Second choice would be either the Moorea Pearl or the Sofitel. The view of the Sofitel from the road is spectacular, but I'm not sure about the view from their bungalows, which face Tahiti. Another large hotel is the Intercontinental, also very nice. Getting to Bora Bora involves a 1-hour flight ($300 to $400 probably). Everything is supposed to be more expensive there. The lagoon is second to none. That's what I've been told from people coming from Bora Bora. | 2
