Hotel near harbour

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

We are going on a Paul Gauguin cruise in July and we need an additional night in Papeete before and after. Is there a hotel where we can stay that is in town, so we can see the city and is also near the harbour - ideally where we can walk to the ship. I guess my problem is that I don't know exactly where the harbour is and haven't found a good map that tells me! Many of the hotels on the PG website seem to be resorts that are out of town and taxis/transfers are needed. We don't need a fancy place, but do want clean and comfortable - 3 or 4 stars is fine - would consider 5 if that was all there was.

The harbor is right smack downtown. :-)

I recommend the Hotel Tiare (next to the post office) which is in easy walking distance to the cruise ship dock, the downtown market and everything else Papeete has to offer. You'll also find the roulottes close-by (crepes, various kinds of Chinese food, opens at 6 pm) where many of the locals and tourists eat because the food is reasonably priced. It's an outdoor food court.

The Hotel Tiare is clean and comfortable, serves French breakfast, but the rooms out front tend to be noisy because they are on the water front boulevard. Great view of Moorea. The hotel is frequented by European travellers who are in town before and after a flight or a cruise with the Gauguin or the Aranui.

Many thanks NukuHiva. That is helpful.

Mandarin is also decent, but check out the bed(s) in the room before you accept that room. Some are good, others are horrible.

Eat at the Chinese restaurants, or the roulettes near the harbor.
