island hopping easy and budget hostels in FP

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

Hello,

is it possible to do island hopping in Tahiti and French Polynesia with a budget? Do they also have some backpacker budget accomodation? Maybe you als know a very nice trip there for 3-4 weeks? I also want so see Bora Bora.

Maybe you know also, if it is easy to become a crew member on a saling boat? So that I only have to pay for the food and some basics.

Thanks

You can travel on cargo boats. There are camping and dorm accomodations available on some of the islands. I've posted some helpful links in the FAQ (check out both my posts) plus I have useful information in my blog (see my signature line).

Yes it is definitely possible to visit French Polynesia on a budget. We did exactly that last year. Some of the great value places we discovered and stayed at were Chez Nono on Bora Bora, Pension Mauarii on Huahine. There are roulottes/snack vans on each island where you could get delicious filling meals at a reasonable price and fruit and fish are plentiful and very reasonable if you ever feel like self catering.

We stayed at Pension Ahitea over 3 days during Heiva. It's a very nice little pension and convenient to the roulottes and market. It was a fair hike to Place Toata to see the Heiva. It was 8500 XPF for a double with shared bathroom including continental breakfast.
