Island hopping... recommendations/must sees or dos

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

This may be asking too much but everyone was so helpful in my last post, we'll see how this one pans out.

On our cruise of FP/Cook Islands we'll be stopping at the following islands:

- Tahiti
- Moorea
- Huahine
- Bora Bora
- Raiatea
- Rarotonga (Cook Islands)

We'll have a total of 4 days in Moorea and 3 days in Tahiti. Other stops, only 1-2 days. When I travel, I like to go with the flow and I don't like planning excursions/activities too long in advance. The problem is, if I wait until we get to an island to book some type of tour, the tours may already be full. So I was wondering if any of you would have suggestions of things to do at each stop that don't involve tours/booked excursions. Tips for places to visit, beaches to lounge on, lagoons to snorkel in? Also, any info on how we could get to these places from the dock would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again!

I would suggest you check out www.tahiti-explorer.com. They have a very active message board and lots of helpful posters. There is also a section geared to cruisers who should be able to answer all your questions. As for Rarotonga - there is a great bus service that you could use to take you to Muri Beach for swimming or to Titikaveka for snorkeling. If you are there long enough you may want to look into a day trip to Aitutaki.
