Leaving Paradise

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

Hi fellow travelers,
I'll be leaving Eureka to port around April 1 aboard a boat bound for Fatu Hiva, in the Marquesas. After 3 weeks on the Pacific, I'd like a week or so before returning to the grind.
That puts my departure time in doubt.
I am wondering about the wisdom of pre- purchasing a ticket for flying out of Fatu Hiva or Hiva Oa, to Papeete, Tahiti, vs buying them on the spot.
Do I split a R/T ticket with another one-way traveler? Buy an unrestricted ticket now? OR what?
Any suggestions, experiences are welcome.
Thanks,
Bill

I haven't been there yet, but from what I've read over the yrs the flights to and from the Marquesas (to PPT) can be booked full up well in advance.

I doubt you can split an RT, and actually most RT's in the SP are just two one-way tickets anyway.

You also may need an air ticket to Tahiti from the Marquesas, as well as one from Tahiti back to the US (or to another country) to even be allowed to get off the boat in the Marquesas. You would basically be entering French Polynesia, and usually an onward or return ticket must be shown when you arrive.

so, all thinga considered, I'd buy the ticket now, and also check out with the Fr. Consulate or Embassy if you need a PPT/LAX ticket etc as well.

Curious as to what ship you are on? Is it via Oceanic Voyages agency??

[On another note---do you live in Hyampom CA??? I've been thinking of heading up there for a visit, from SF.]
