MARQUISES - Best islands to visit ?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

Ia Orana , good morning , bonjour ,

We are actually in French Polynesia and I am planning with my wife to spend 8 days - or maybee 2 weeks - in Marquises Islands , starting from Rangiroa . We know already Moorea, Huahine, Bora-Bora , several Tuamotus and other islands and are looking for something more authentic , more polynesian , less touristic places...

Because Aranui 3 is out of service this month , we will do this trip by ourself. So ,if you have been in Marquises already, thanks for your answer to a few questions. We are " old " swiss travellers, use to travel by ourself since a long time and like to " discover " some special remote places and meet some frendly local people.

  • Nuku Hiva or Hiva Oa ?
Witch island is a must , for beauty of landscapes , excursions , frendship of local people ? because Nuku Hiva is quite difficult to travel , so maybee it's easier for me to reach directly Hiva Oa.

  • Ua Pou : is it possible to find a boat - speed boat, bonnitier - to reach Ua Pou Taihoae ? Or by helicopter , instead of plane ? ( I suppose it's a scheduled helico flight every tuesday )

  • Ua Huka : Is this island also interesting to visit for wood sculptor - with a lot of horses , like easter island ?

  • Fatu Hiva : It seems it's the more remote and authentic island of Marquises , but hard to reach. Witch is the best and simplest (?) to reach it from Hiva Oa ?

  • Weather : is it not too mutch humidity in Marquises during January ? ( I am now in Moorea, where it rain a lot since 3 days )

  • Accomodation : In those islands , witch frendly . family style place could you recomend us ?

Thank a lot for all your comments and answers to this post and sorry for my poor English.

Sailing around those islands and stoping in different bays they were quite equal for me and beautifull. Maybe it is not much help, just go and see around :)
