Medical assistance for EU citizens

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

Do European Union citizens have the right to medical assistance in French Polynesia, as they do anywhere in EU countries? (This may mean paying up front, and being reimbursed later by our own national Health Service).
In other words, is French Polynesia considered as part of France in this respect, or as an extra-EU entity?
Thanks

Unlike Guadeloupe or Reunion for example, which are overseas departments of France, French Polynesia is an overseas country of France and as such not part of the EU. Therefore there are no privileges for EU citizens. Different from a stay in France, for example, you will need a visa for French Polynesia too, even as an EU citizen, if you intend to stay more than 3 months.
