moorea travel and accommodation

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

hi

My girlfriend and myself will be going to Moorea for 1-2 weeks in late Sept. We're just looking at options for budget accomadation. We'll be spending most of our time in Vaiare helping a friend build.

Question is could we stay pretty much anywhere on the island and still be within 10-15 minutes drive or scooter ride from Vaiare? I realise the island is roughly 60KM round so probably not, but just wanting to know how long it usually takes to travel say for eg from Chez Nelsons to Vaiare.

thanks

No. Chez Nelson is on the opposite side of the island. I'm guessing a half hour. Post your question on the Tahiti Explorer forum for a more accurate answer.

I think we'll be staying at the Sunset beach hotel in Raiatea and the Fare Maeva in Moorea, any comments about these places would be greatly appreciated

We stayed at the Sunset Beach last August and were very pleased with our choice. They picked us up at the airport and stopped at a store along the way so we could buy supplies. Cold coconut drinks were waiting in the refrigerator and flowers were in abundance. We had a large one bedroom with small kitchenette area that was clean and well maintained. We were steps from a small beach area with a long dock that was great for sunsets. The staff at the office helped with booking tours and a car. They also had bikes for rent(pricey). We would highly reccommend it and Raiatea. We were impressed with the beauty of the island.

Silvanocat is correct: the drive from Chez Nelson to Vaiare is about 30-40 minutes, depending on time of day and traffic to/from the ferry. You could take le truck from Le Petit Village, but it only runs according to the ferry schedule.

Also for future reference i found out that a cargo ferry goes from PPT to Raiatea on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays, leaves about 4pm and gets in at 3am, its about 5000 francs for a cabin with double bed
The return leg goes Tuesday, Thursday and Sadday, leaves at 3pm (raiatea) and gets in (PPT)at 6am.
I think this also passes through Huahine and afer Raiatea goes onto Borabora

Picking these times could chance though, the contact details are
Vaeanu (tel. (00689) 41.25.35; fax 41.24.34; torehiatetu@mail.pf, they speak only French.

Think we'll be taking the plane as we'll be catching an international flight the next day and dont want to risk being held up in the event of rough seas.

You can check the price for accommodations only in the Moorea Island here : Moorea Island , the price that I saw is starting from 172 USD per room per night. It is great price actually because there are only a few resorts in that incredible destination.
