I'm interested in staying in an over-water bungalow. I know they're popular in Tahita and there are a few in the Carribean. I would like an honest idea of what its like. For instance...are there a lot of insects? Is privacy a problem? What about safety? Are they smelly? Hot? Etc. They seem wonderful...I love nature...but only from the comfort and safety of shelter! LOL. Tell me the good, the bad and the ugly - for the ones in in FP and the Carribean. Thanks.
The Tahiti explorer forum is the place to go to find folks who have stayed in over-water bungalows. | 1
In Tahiti the overwater bungalows range from three - five star depending on the property. ALL are expensive! As a matter of fact in Bora Bora the high end ones are over $1,000 per night. The least expensive would be in Moorea or one of the Tuamotus. Some of the less expensive properties don't have screens on the top of the bungalow where the roof meets the walls BUT overwater there are less bugs to be sure! Most properties spray for them as well. The ones without screened windows almost always have mosquito netting over the bed. As a general rule this is the most expensive accomodation you can stay in on any island in Tahiti. No down side that I have ever experienced and I go every six months. Hope this helps! | 2
If insects and lack of privacy are big concerns, I think you'll like an overwater bungalow. No insects, lots of privacy. The only problem is the cost. But if can afford it, go for it. | 3
Thanks for the input. I'll just save my pennies and go someday...they sure seem like paradise on earth! :-) | 4

Overwater rooms make for a long walk back and forth to bar, resturant, lobby, etc. and are expensive..... | 6
I’m looking to go to an overwater bungalow for my honeymoon in January. We probably can’t afford more than a week’s stay (although 10 days would be ideal). We aren't interested in partying - just snorkeling and relaxing. What is the most economical over-water bungalow lodgings in the islands? | 7
The least expensive OWB's are at Club Bali Hai in Moorea and the Maitai in Bora Bora. However those don't go far out into the water. Also take a look at the Raiatea Hawaki Nui. You might find a good package for the Pearl Resorts in Tikehau or Manihi. | 8
Packages often do have a good weekly rate for OTW bungalows, worth checking them out, they also may have cheaper airfare in a package. | 9
Thank you! | 10 | |
