Just wondering if anyone had come accross some good places for hiring either cars or scooters on Moorea or Raiatea, I read that it might be best to suss it out over internet before hand for cheaper rates, sureley it cant be that expensive for scooter hire can it?

Hi,

I can't remember prices sorry, it was two years ago when we were there but.... we arrived on Moorea with nothing booked... there are car and scooter hire offices at the ferry terminal where you arrive... we had no problem getting a car on the spot. This was February and availability may vary with busier times of the year...

Copied from Frommers Web site:

"By Rental Car & Scooter -- Avis (tel. 800/331-1212 or 56.32.68; www.avis.com) and Europcar (tel. 800/227-7368 or 56.34.00; www.europcar.com) both have booths at the Vaiare ferry wharf and at several hotels. Although I usually rent from Avis, Europcar is the more widespread and slightly less expensive of the two, with unlimited-kilometer rates starting at 8,600CFP a day. The local firm Albert Rent-a-Car (tel. 56.13.53) is the least expensive, with unlimited-kilometer rates starting at 8,000CFP for a day. Insurance is included in all rates, but gasoline is not.

In addition to automobiles, Avis also rents little "Fun Cars" (noisy contraptions with two seats and no top) and somewhat larger (and safer) open-air Be-Up vehicles. Both are fun to drive on sunny days. So are scooters, which Europcar and Albert rent starting at 4,800CFP for 4 hours and 6,000CFP for 24 hours, including gas, full insurance, and unlimited kilometers.

Making reservations for cars and scooters is a very good idea, especially on weekends, when many Tahiti residents come to Moorea."

As they were quoting the US dollar at $1 = 100 I would assume that this information is a few years old.

thanks for the replies

I called Alberts car rentals which everyone seems to think is the best deal, they quoted 5,000 for 4 hrs and 30,800 CFP for a week for a scooter and 30,000 CFP for a car,
