Surfing and Accommodation in TahitiCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia
Hi, | ||
Tahiti is an awesome place for surf...It is also very, very expensive and relatively crowded in the water. We were there in May last year and found surf pretty much everywhere - Chopes was only fairly small, but incredibly crowded (the billabong pro finished the day we arrived....). If you can afford to rent a car, I'd advise it as the surf spots are scattered right around Tahiti Iti and Tahiti Nui. The road follows the coast for a lot of the circumference, so surf checks are relatively easy. We also surfed on Moorea. I don't really have cheap suggestions for accommodation though, sorry, as we stayed at a friend's place at Teahupoo. On Moorea, we stayed at Les Tipiniers (sp?) which was a bit of a splurge. There can be a heavy local factor in the water, so respect the locals and take the occasional deep breath in the lineup! We didn't have any problems though. | 1
We stayed at Vanira lodge in Teahupoo. You really need a car, we didn't. Its nice up there but the hill is a steep walk. The kids hitchhiked or rode bikes to the break. they paddled out and mostly watched, but did catch a few waves on smaller days. Le Truc is a cheap way to get around Tahiti. The ferry to Moorea is also cheap. On Moorea we stayed at Haapiti Surf lodge. We went in June of last year. I'm starting to get the Poly-flu again. | 2
While I didn't surf I've kayaked out to the break and watched for awhile at Teahupoo and several other places. #2 seems to have nailed your advice perfectly, according to what I saw. | 3
Check out the webpage below. On # 5 of the list of "100 Things to Do on Tahiti," (page 4 of the document), it gives some info about where to surf and who to contact for surfing info. Hope this helps! | 4
