Tahiti for one?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tahiti & French Polynesia

Hi-
I just read about a great airfare to Tahiti & I've always wanted to go but am a little wary - is it going to be full of romantic honeymooning couples? Or would a person traveling alone be able to find a little adventure without feeling "left out?" Any suggestions? I'm looking for a trip where I could have some combo of lying on the beach, some kind of "adventurous" hike, some snorkling, etc and at a local-type guest house/hostel. Ideally with huts on the beach. I'm not looking for 5-star resort (although if I could pop in for a spa day at 1, that might be nice). Doesn't have to just be Tahiti - could be any of the French Polynesians.
Would love to hear what you all think.
Thanks.

I traveled for years (28) to Tahiti as a couple. In the last 5 I have been single and done it twice that way. Other 5 went with one of my older children.

Frankly I found it a little lonely when I went by myself. But would rather go alone than not at all. So, GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You might want to try the Club Med on Bora Bora, not very expensive and a large staff to entertain you. Some staff member will always be willing so join you for meals, etc........

When we (a married couple) were planning our FP trip we corresponded with a single woman we met online at www.tahiti-explorer.com. We had dinner with her in Huahine (she stayed at Chez Gynette, a guesthouse that singles like) and she was really glad that she had made the trip by herself as she had always wanted to visit the islands. We ran into her again later in our trip on Bora Bora. She was staying at Chez Nono and having a great time. She had met up with a couple of other singles and had gone diving with them. If I were to go by her experience I would think you would have a great time on your own. You just need to find the smaller pensions or guesthouses where singles are likely to hang out. As boraborabob said - GO FOR IT!!!

I went to Tahiti by myself and it is true, the majority of travellers are couples. I still had a wonderful time.
several couples invited me to dine with them. Also, if you could visit some places that the locals frequent
you will be thoroughly entertained. i found Moorea and Papeete to be more interesting than Bora Boring and
Huahine.
