| harry_mudd09:26 UTC14 Sep 2007 | Tonga slaughtered the USA 25-15 in the Rugby World Cup!
good on ya boys!!!!!!!!!!
| |
| silvanocat10:05 UTC14 Sep 2007 | I wonder how our USA cricket team is doing?
| 1 |
| raro16:25 UTC14 Sep 2007 | Probably as good as our Australian Rules Football team!
| 2 |
| bendigo11:14 UTC15 Sep 2007 | The only Aussie Rules game that really mattered this weekend was the Bendigo Junior Football League Under 12B Preliminary Final, in which St Francis of the Fields Primary School beat Golden Square 6 7 43 to 3 6 24 (for those from out of town, 1 Goal is equal to 6 points).
(Even their team managers suggested they bring a spare jumper to their first final, so they could hand in the team uniform afterwards - since scraping home in the Elimination Final, they had a 3 Goal win in the First Semi Final, and have now backed up with a win in the Preliminary.)
Consequently, for the first time in a couple of generations, one of the family, who obviously doesn't get his sporting ability from his father, gets to play in a Grand Final!
We're hoping for big things against Holy Rosary next weekend, in a game that could create a schism in the local Parish!

| raro13:36 UTC15 Sep 2007 | Best of luck ( although I only have a bare understanding of the rules and scoring!)

| mandja20:48 UTC15 Sep 2007 | Bendigo is a breeding ground for top-flight pro AFL footballers. For Raro and other Seppos- think Sav Rocca.
| 5 |
| raro09:50 UTC16 Sep 2007 | Hi Mandja-- Well, I'm not sure what a "Seppo" is , nor "Sav Rocca" !!!
Should I venture a guess that the "Pies" are the 'Magpies" in an Aust. rugby sport??? :)
| 6 |
| mandja09:58 UTC16 Sep 2007 | Raro, "The Pies" are an AFL Australian Football team. Sav Rocca was a star forward for the pies (acually the Collingwood Magpies). Australian footbal is not at all like American nor Rugby - its more akin to Gaelic Football http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Football_League[/L]

- Rocca is now a punter with the Philly Eagles - You tube debut Aug 13, 2007.
I apologise for calling you a "Seppo" - it is the Aussie rhyming slang term for Americans
| 7 |
| mandja10:00 UTC16 Sep 2007 | The Pies are in a major final this Friday night - a win puts them in the playoff for the major AFL prize. The playoff is a one-off ie a win that week = the Premiership Cup.
| 8 |
| silvanocat11:21 UTC16 Sep 2007 | Well I had to google to find out how seppo rhymed with Yank and this is the answer (from about.com):
A "step is to abbreviate (or corrupt) the first word, so that not only is the rhyming word gone but the first word in the phrase is corrupted."
The original phrase is septic tank for Yank and septic is corrupted into seppo.

| raro14:22 UTC16 Sep 2007 | Well Mandja, now that silvano has explained it, apology accepted!!
We did see some aussie Rules game on the SKY satellite in RAR, so I have a general idea of it. With that ounching-tpe forward pass, it actually is closer to American football (gridiron) than either union or leagur rugby.
I haven't seen an Eagles game on TV yet (there are 15 games each weekend!). But my lowly Oakland Raiders finally won a game today on a last-minute field goal---or so we and all the announcers on TV thought. It was then ruled that the other team (slyly) had the refs call a time out about one-second before that play began! He had hit a very long field goal (3-point kick), and when he tried it again the second time, he hit the upright and it went off to one side. My team then lost in overtime.
Maybe we'll beat the Eagles someday!
There is an Aussie pitcher in baseball, forget what team he is on.
Best of luck Fri. night!

| mandja14:31 UTC16 Sep 2007 | Raro, there are currently 4 Aussie MLB pitchers - look here.
I was in SF in June and was thrilled to catch a Giants game with Barry Bonds playing. Sadly they had him do the "chicken walk " 3 times that match !!I loved the Garlic fries and the enormous Churros. The wife loved the man walking round with the backpack and hose dispensing hot-chocolate - none of these available at Aussie sports games.I'd never been to a pro-baseball match before - great fun.
Do they play that womens cricket game in Cooks that we saw on NC? (just to bring this back to PI sport).

| raro05:34 UTC17 Sep 2007 | Hi Mandja--- Yes, the food at baseball games has gotten a lot of variety since I was a kid. It used to be just hot dogs and popcorn, now it's a lot of regional food, etc. Even full restaurants below the stands.
[But it's never called a baseball "match", always a "game"---you'll be giving away that you're a tourist if you call it a "match"!]
I think I saw some women's cricket games a few yrs ago, but netball is the biggest women's sport in the Cooks. At one time a few yrs ago they were ranked something like #5 in the world. But now they are down quite a bit from that. Womens' soccer has also gotten pretty popular.

| harry_mudd10:54 UTC18 Sep 2007 | Oi!
hijack your own threads!
This is about Tonga Rugby!!!!!!!!!!
hehehehe
| 13 |
| raro14:26 UTC18 Sep 2007 | OK, Harry, let's get back to more serious matters :) : Is it called a rugby "match", or a rugby "game"???
| 14 |
| harry_mudd10:18 UTC19 Sep 2007 | I dunno. I hear it is the GAME they play in heaven.

| bendigo19:22 UTC22 Sep 2007 | Back to the hijack for a moment:
Unfortunately, the St Francis boys went down in their Grand Final match agains Holy Rosary.
After leasding until late in the third quarter, scores were dead level at 3/4 time.
A very scrappy final quarter saw HR with the majority of the play, and they went on to scrape a 2 point win from our boys.
Have to admire the resilience of the young though - after sulking for a while yesterday, the cricket bat came out today - he wants to move on!
Samoa beaten by England; Tonga beaten by Sth Africa - I hope we crush the Fijians tonight (with apologies to Atu and Jaoji if you've ventured into this airspace!)

| raro05:37 UTC23 Sep 2007 | Sorry to hear the results Bendigo. But yes, move on. (My Raiders are ready to move to next season already, after two weeks of horrible play!). The Eagles play today, I'll have to check on Sav Rocca later on.
| 17 |
| mandja05:57 UTC23 Sep 2007 | Sav Rocca's old Australian team was beaten on Friday night by a very small margin, and will thus not be in the Final on Saturday. Hopefully he'l fare better with the Eagles. Notably the Pies beat the (Perth)Eagles in qualifying for Fridays match.
Australia has beaten Fiji in the Rugby game overnight. Dont remember the score - I dont follow rugby.
