Airports and taking food into Tonga?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

Hi - we are heading to Tonga mid September and were wondering if anyone knows:

  1. whether it's ok to take food into Tonga - are the rules similar to other countries - i.e. no fruit, vege, meat etc but say snack food is allowed? and

  2. what is the best and fastest way to get from the international terminal to the domestic terminal? We are flying up to ha'apai after arriving in from Auckland. I hear that sometimes taxis can be sparse - is this correct or should we be ok?

Thanks in advance for any answers - much appreciated!

1-Yes.

2-Cab too far/PITA to walk unless you have a very light load.

Cabs will meet a flight inbound from NZ but might be reluctant to take you for a 5 minute ride-maybe you can split a cab with someone who's going the same way or even continuing into Nuku'alofa.

What do you mean by "domestic terminal"? When did Tonga get a separate terminal for domestic flights? When I lived there, there was just one terminal…

"When I lived there, there was just one terminal… "

You must be really really old ....(!)

When I first saw this it gave me a good laugh (no offense intended to the original question). But then this:

"When I lived there, there was just one terminal… "

When i was there not that long ago there was only one airport on Tongatapu, but hey maybe I missed something so I checked out the TAL website which says that there are 6 operational airports in Tonga, all on diferent island groups. With the only one on Tongatapu being Fua'amotu International (which is how I remember it - domestic and inetrnational in the one terminal).

Am I missing something?

Yes surprisingly there is a separate domestic terminal--about 5min from the international terminal. A Cab would be the fastest/easiest way to get there.

You shouldn't have a problem with food-just as long as you declare what you have. Tongan Customs are a joke anyway.

No #3, within the last 2 years.

;-)

OP, it ain't far.

6

Well, it's been seven years since I left Tonga... but I'm not that old.

Anyhow, good to know there's a separate terminal.

7

I hope you didn't take offence (!) means something like raised eyebrows/joke/silly comment-nothing more.

8

No offense/offence taken.
Sai pe ia.

Well, it's all one big property, but the domestic building is maybe 100m or so away from the int'l arrivals. I'd get a taxi, just pay them whatever they ask, unless you have a very light load, as hardnosehighway said.

Packaged foods OK, some locals even had a box of frozen meat. But I'd stay away from that.

  1. Same as other countries re. quarantine laws, but you are allowed to bring in packaged foods and as much KFC as you like ;)
  2. 5 Minutes to the Domestic Terminal By Car! so if you are travelling light and feel like hauling your backpack for about a kilometre or two... go for it! You will need to hire a taxi and generally if you let the bulk of the City travellers go... the leftover drivers would not be so grumpy about your short fare.. or you can just be up-front about the Domestic Terminal and give them the choice!
