Best island for solo travelers?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

Hi -- I am planning on visiting Tonga in September for a week or so. I will be traveling alone with the main purpose of swimming with the whales. I am trying to decide which islands to visit. I realize my options for swimming with the whales are either Vavau or Haapai. While it sounds like Haapai might be the better of the islands for whale watching/swimming I am a bit concerned that I will find it very lonely as I am traveling by myself. Is there much of a tourist "scene" on this island? Or are you pretty much stuck at the place you are staying at? Are there choices of restaurants?

I realize Vavau might be better for social aspects but have read that the whale encounters from that island are more rushed and/or crowded.

Any thoughts?
Thank you,
Michael

Vavau certainly sounds better for you.
There is definitely no "choice of restaurants" in Hapaai, and tourists are few and scattered there. There are more accessible beaches though.

Ha'apai is a large sandbar and little else-beautiful place but what you see is what you get.
