Church Conferences in Tonga

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

Every year, Tongans in Tonga and from overseas enjoy their annual church conference. Whoever visited Tonga in May or June might have seen these festivities.

Church of Tonga Hou'eiki congregation has been having their annual church conference, only a block away from my house for the past 10 days. Beating of Tongan drums begins even before 7 am in the morning everyday (except Sunday), and they have feasts once in the morning and once in the evening. In most cases, foreign passersby are invited to the feast and even given more food to take back.

Their traditional dances are so genuine and verses of songs and choreography are created only for that occasion. The congregation are dressed in a tradition dance constumes, strolling around.

It's so Tongan! I just love them.

This year, the Free Weslyan Church of Tonga, the largest congregation in Tonga, will have their conference in Tongatapu. If you happen to visit Tonga during that time, make sure you take a peek, or even have a taste!

Queen Mother Initiates Women’s Preparations toward FWC Conference

hi amaile - brings back memories. The Weslyan Church conference was on while we were in Nuku'alofa and we were invited to a couple of the feasts. Each village had to take it in turns in putting on breakfast, lunch or dinner for the 2000 attendees. The woman I was working with was planning and preparing her village lunch for weeks ahead. She and her neigbours were up all night the night before their lunch preparing food. It was amazing to experience.....
