Coronation in Tonga

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

Dear all

I have the following question: Should I go to Tonga during the coronation ceremony? Afterwards I will go to Samoa but obviously I could do it visa versa and go first to Samoa. I think the coronation ceremony sounds incredible interesting but on the other hand I've read here in the forum quite negative comments as well. Do you think I will be able to find a budget accommodation around that time?

Thanks
Katinka

If you are planning to stay at backpacker sort of place, book now. Foreign delegations are not going to stay at backpackers. Try Sela's Guesthouse or Misa's Guesthouse. Both of them are in walking distance from the centre of the town.

Since I am living in Tonga, I intend never to miss the event. This is the first time in 40 years.

Cheers,

As of late March all accommodations in Tonga during the Coronation are booked up, but there may be waiting lists, and it is possible that backpackers' hostels are not included (although there aren't many). Flights are also getting booked up very fast.
