Getting to TofuaCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga
Hey everyone In a few weeks I'll be in Tonga for a couple of weeks. Most of that time I'll b busy but I have a few days off and I'd love to visit and climb Tofua. I'll be based in Tongatapu. Does anyone have advice on the logistics of geting to Tofua from Tongatapu? I hear it's not easy. Especilly, wil 2 days cover a trip there and back, and how can I make the trip? Can I go directly from Tongatapu or will I need to make my way to Lifuka? Although I would like to see the Island Bligh landed on mainly I would like to climb the volcano. In the guide book all the volcanoes in Tonga seem to be pretty dificult to get to from Tongatapu, but if anyone has advice on an alternative volcano to climb that's easier to access I'd really appreciate the advice.
Did you get to Tofua? | 1 | |
No. To get there you need to charter a speed boat and its a 4 hr trip each way. Then when you get there the island is uninhabited and you need to set up camp on your own, need to bring everything yourself. But as far as I could make out the boat wouldn't be able to come to shore, you need to swim a bit. I didn't have the time or resources to pull it off. Tonga was great but climbing a live volcano remains on my bucket list unfortunately. | 2
