Ideas and tips for visiting Tonga and how to find our way around

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

Hi I am visiting Tonga in about 4 weeks, flying into Nuku'Alofa, I am interested in seeing the Ha'amonga 'A maui Trilithon any tips how to get there ect?? Also any tips at all on where to stay how to travel around what to see and do would be great. We will be there for a couple of weeks. Appreciate any suggestions or tips thanks from karon.

Almost all cabs do tours of the island-I used Joe's Friendly Island Tours, Tel (676) 41 954 he took us everyhwere and knows a lot about his home.

I agree that it's a great place for cycling-cheap rentals too.

"She came with a loaf of bread and some instant coffee and said it was serve ourselves"

Well that's several cuts above the standard Tongan breakfast of a can of peanuts!

Hi there,
There is lots to do in Tonga depending on how long you are staying there for. There are a few Tourist Centres in town such as Jones and Friends that will be able to help with Island Tours. I would recommend you include Anahulu Cave (it has a freshwater pool at the end you can swim in) and the blowholes on the tour. At this time of year you can often see whales from the shore of the West Coast beaches as well. You can do day trips to nearby islands such as Fafa and Pangaimotu islands from Tongatapu. If you want to travel to outer islands Eua is more an island you can do bush walks etc, Haapai has beautiful white sand beaches and I would say Vavau is the more touristy of the islands and would reccomend you spend a day out on a boat to explore Vavau. They are all beautiful islands, all offer whale watching, great diving, a range of accommodation etc.
Hope this helps and have a great trip!
