Ideas for a good beach resort in Vava'u?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

Next august I would like to spend 2 weeks in Vava'u.
I'll be with my wife and with 4 children.
We would like to stay in a nice resort right on the beach and dive, snorkel, whale watching.
Some Ideas?

The Tongan Beach Resort.
The good and bad about it is it is away from town which makes it a little more difficult to go elsewhere for meals.
But the whale watching and dive operators cruise on by and will pick you up from the resorts pontoon which is nice.
I don't think that there are any resorts with good snorkelling at the doorstep, you will have to kayak or get a boat to the best spots.

Mala would be a nice stay for a couple nights only.

I agree with above, you might try a couple of days at Tongan Beach Resort, and then one of the islands off into the lagoon. Or, spend a few days at the beginning at the Paradise Int'l Resort, a couple of blocks from town. The kids will have an easy walk into town from there, to the market, etc., but there isn't a good beach near town.

We spent about 8 days on Mala island with our three kids in 2005. It was nice and has nice small beach that you can snorkell straight off. They also have a trampoline built into the sand which the boys had lots of fun on. I think it's nicer than the Tongan beach resort (and the food was much cheaper - but still expesnive). The owner, Dave, was very accommodating, he organised a few things to make it easier for our kids - we had a few days of rain and so he got videos set up for them, he also arranged food for them apart from the set menu. But see previous threads on Mala - Dave is unusual character and has peed some people right off.
