Internal Flights - Tonga

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

Hi we are going to Tonga for a week at the end of July. We want to go from Tongatapu to Vava'u. I understand there are 2 airlines that fly internally. Who is the best to fly with. We want to fly to Vava'u on a Stauraday and come back on a Friday late morning. Also how far is the domestic terminal from the international terminal. As we are arriving at 3:30am how do we get to the domestic terminal?
Also we would like to do a fishing charter in Vava'u but not gamefishing, just wahoo and Mahimahi. But fishing charters are very expensive and I am not a fisher but my husband is. Any recommendations? We have snorkel gear with us so I am happy to do a stop and snorkell. Any help with this really appreciated. 2 kiwi travellers. Jo and Andrew.

The airline situation domestically is chaotic and poorly run-I would make online reservations with both Airlines (is Peau Vava'u even up and running last I heard they were having more problems) and then see what happens when you arrive in the country.

You can take a cab-if there's a cab to be found-from International to Domestic-it's a long long walk.

Be Advised-Your tightly knit plan will almost certainly come unraveled, planes are late/overbooked/leave early/endless delays because of weather or just plain incompetence-schedules change at the the last minute with no explanation.

Vava'u is a wonderful plce but the gawdawful excuse for air transport mean it's a challenge/PITA/nightmare for anyone with a tight schedule like yours to access.

"we would like to do a fishing charter in Vava'u but not gamefishing, just wahoo and Mahimahi"

Wahoo and Mahi Mahi are gamefish-do you mean you want something to eat-that will have to be negotiated with the Captain.

Tongan boats sell the fish they catch it should be no problem for you to keep enough for dinner.

Talk to the Staff @ Ikapuna Store on the main street in Neiafu-the owner Paul has a large comfortable boat that he charters for a reasonable rate. He's lived on Vava'u for 20+ years and is an avid snorkler as well most of his clients are Kiwis.

If that's too much talk to Curt who owns the Scooter Rental place he has a smaller boat-skiff-that he charters.

Just be advised that's he doesn't have quite the experience that people who've lived there for many years have so results might not be as good.

About the internal flight, the situation is just crazy.

Air Peau only has a small plane on the air for only 5 passengers, and trying to reduce the number of flights to save fuel cost!!!!

Airlines Tonga does not reply to e-mails, web-bookings, web-site expired, Fiji Air not communicating with Tonga side, etc. etc.

I would opt for contacting a local travel agent, such as Pacific Travel Marketing, for do your internal flight arrangement.

I used them a couple of yrs ago and they were very good.
Make sure you phone them or the airline about 8am on the days of travel, as the flight schedules for each day can change at the last m inute. A 10:30am flight I was ready to head for turned out to be re-scheduled to 2:30pm, glad I phoned before I left for the airport!
