Overnight in Nuku Alofa

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good place to stay for one night in Nuku Alofa? We'll be taking a flight out in the afternoon and want to catch a glimpse of the town before we leave. Need ensuite bathroom/shower, clean room and fresh bedding for two < $250TOP.

Most places are under TOP250.
Capt Cook apartments is OK for 230. They have TVs, ensuite, self catering kitchenette etc.
The Nukualofa hotel is cheaper and more central

I have the same question.

Many people talk about places they don't recommend, but I'd like to know a place that can be recommended for an overnight in Nuku. Centrally located, ensuite bathroom, clean, and with a restaurant that will be open on Christmas day :-)

I don't know about Christmas day but Little Italy has a great restaurant that is open for breakfast and dinner. We stayed there for a total of two nights, 1 going out to Ha'apai and 1 coming back from Vava'u. We also considered the Seaview but opted for Little Italy after talking to a local in Nadi.

Very nice staff and clean rooms. The room in the front that we stayed in was smaller (read cramped) than the rear room we had on the return. If you don't need the view I'd opt for the rear-facing room, no view but 30% larger.

Thanks H2.
Did they have wi-fi?

4

They did... the whole island was just going through an upgrade.... they had just hooked up a high-speed fiber cable to Tonga.

The cable has been pulled to Tonga but the network speed has not increased yet - wireless is still very poor almost everywhere. The 2 providers, Digicel and TCC do not have the equipment /capacity here to take advantage of the cable as yet - very poor planning.

I have stayed in Capt Cook for 5 weeks, Little Italy a night, Nukualofa hotel a night, Lagoon lodge and Nanisis place and all are fine and all have wifi except Nukualofa hotel. If staying at the Nukualofa hotel you can get wifi almost across the street at any of Escape café, Reload bar or Friends café.

Little Italy, Capt Cook and the Black Pearl are the most expensive places in town and of course amongst the nicest, but if I was just here for a night and just wanted a clean place with ensuite there is no need to spend over 200TOP.

I would chose the Nukualofa hotel for value/being central if for one night. If a longer term stay, Nanisis place is the best value hands down.

Our bill at Little Italy came to $140US for the first night and $152US for the second night both with a hot breakfast and a nice dinner for two.
