places to stay / visit in Tonga - 1 week trip

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

Hello all. I am a photographer documenting places that are being affected by climate change. I will be in Tonga for just a one week detour (March 10-16) before going to Australia. Can anyone recommend inexpensive places to stay on Tongatapu and also suggest nearby smaller islands that I could get to in my short visit. I want to photograph lower-lying areas and/or places that are showing erosion due to rising sea levels. Any suggestions on finding boat rides from locals between the islands. I'd love to talk to people who have lived there awhile and can comment on how climate change is affecting their land/lives. Thanks!

The lowest lying archipelago in this region is Ha'apai, so that would be the best place for you to visit. Rather than rising sea levels, altered weather patterns may be the first concern for people.

Yes, thank you for that tip. Someone from Tonga just suggested that to me too - and I think that is where I will spend my time after the weekend in Nuka-alofa.

I stayed just in the main island, and despite the comments on this forum

I couldn't say a word against Toni. He does get pissed off at his staff, but nothing to feel bad about.
Can't give any more contribution that you would find useful, but all in all, I loved the place.
