"good" samaritan

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

to anyone who is planning on going to Tonga: i wanted to share my experience i had while staying at Good Samaritan Inn on the western tip of Tongatapu. we arrived in Tonga from NZ late at night and got a lift from the airport out to Good Samaritan. we had booked a self contained room with a double bed in advance. When we arrived nobody was around except for 2 really drunk guys who didnt have keys to any of the rooms, they finally got into a musty, dirty room with a small bed and dirty sheets on it. the taxi driver felt really bad for us and warned us to lock our door. its a shame because the beach was beautiful. although i cant figure out why they ruined it with a barbed wire fence running along it. i dont like complaining about things like this but want to warn other travelers because this place did not feel safe. We got out of there the following day, the girl who was working didnt want to do anything about our complaints and insisted on charging us full price for the room with the double bed which we did not get. we stayed at Tony's guesthouse after that which was really cool. i recommend it. Tonga was a good experience and very beautiful, i want to go back!

I saw quite a few places, beaches included where nasty barbed wire could have been dangerous.

Thanks for your report... As I found out, Tonga is an interesting place and certainly off most traveller's radar.

I would definitely agree with this post.

We stayed at Good Samaritan for 3 nights and the place was deserted, dirty and generally quite strange. Our "fale" was a shed with a bathroom (cold shower, no water would flow in the basin) and 2 beds. The bathroom was filthy and the room wasn't much better. I had ants crawling on me during the night that were crawling up the walls. I had to buy a can of fly spray so I could sleep at night.

The staff generally looked at you strange if you requested anything. And the food was quite terrible, all deep fried.

It's a shame that a lovely beach and outlook are ruined by this run-down establishment. It could be easily and quite cheaply "done up" to make it far more enjoyable.

The fences are there to keep pigs off the property-you do remember the pigs don't you?
