Snorkeling at Nukualofa and Vavau

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

Stopping for a day at Nukualofa while on board the Pacific Sun on a Sunday. Does everything close or can we still find a snorkeling tour? Can anyone who has snorkeled around Tongatapu and Vava'u give me details on tour operators and what we can expect to see in the way of fish and coral. My husband and I have snorkeled various sites around Taihiti, Vanuatu, Fiji, Great Barrier, French Poloynesia,Samoa, Rarotonga and have found that sometimes tours organized through the cruise ship can be disappointing compared to what we have seen. Thanks

Your post is confusing-the two destinations as posted are about 200 miles apart

Tongatapu-
It's easy to do an Island land tour on Sunday lots of companies offer them and they are very well run.

For someone with your experience I wouldn't bother with snorkeling near Tongatapu-the sea has been raked over with a fine toothed comb for a long long time and a charitable person would call what's on offer 'unremarkable'

Vava'u -are you stopping here?

yes Va'vau is the place or Ha'apai. Tongatapu is not renowned for snorkelling, although I have seen people do it on Fafa.

I once watched a whale and her baby cruise by Fafa, but Va'vau has the whale watch tours.
