Tonga,

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Tonga

Hi, decided to travel to Tonga for six days in July. Having trouble deciding where to go, as i six days does not allow too much!!
I have read quite a bit on the forum but my minds starting to get bogged down on top of uni.I am having trouble deciding what to do, both my partner and i are 22. We were in Rarotonga a few months back and really enjoyed the snorkeling.
So i have a question.

1)Where and what would you do for the six days in Tonga?

I was looking at staying three nights in Vava'u would that be enough? and three days in Tongatapu

It would be enough and would be a good option.
Of course you'd need to fly both ways.

I would spend 1 full day in Tongatapu taking Toni's guesthouse island tour (+ an afternoon/night in Nuku’alofa depending on the time you arrive), I also recommend staying at Toni’s. Then I would spend the rest in Vava'u where 2 young people will have fun for sure.

Thanks heaps for the replies. We are going to be staying a night on tongatapu and then fly out to vava'u for three nights at the hilltop then back to tongatapu for a few days. Is there any good places to go snorkeling in vava'u? Or where would you recommend? We heard snorkeling is amazing in tonga but haven't been able to find too much info. Cheers

I think you'll need to take a boat-tour to reach good snorkelling spots in Vavau.
For snorkelling right in front of the beach, Haapai (Uoleva or Foa) is better.

Hilltop is a great place to stay and like the other people say do take a boat tour somwhere. The cheapest/best option is to find a man called Ricky from Riki Tiki Tours, he will be in and around the Aquarium cafe. He has a one man operation and that makes his tours cheap, he is also the most experienced diver there so he knows all the good places.
For a more expensive tour i would recommend the boat Independence for sailing, Otis and Jenny are great hosts and it is not too costly. They have a great big catamaran that they live on with their two children.
If you get tired of Town call Mystic Sands and move out of town for a few days, they are self catering, on the beach and have free kayaks.

Safe travels :)

Cheers for the advice, booked in to go see the whales, will have to find Ricky, that sounds good because the prices i found were a bit out of our price league!!!

Quick question does 70 Top sound a bit much to get an airport shuttle to Liku'Alofa Resort in Tongatapu?
