Tonga airlines

The airlines tonga web page doesn't seem to work. Does anyone know if they have a new website or if this will come back on line at some stage?

I was hoping to book some internal flights in advance, but maybe peau vava'u will be my only choice.

About the internal flight, the situation is just crazy.

Air Peau only has a small plane on the air for only 5 passengers, and trying to reduce the number of flights to save fuel cost!!!!

Airlines Tonga does not reply to e-mails, web-bookings, web-site expired, Fiji Air not communicating with Tonga side, etc. etc.

I would opt for contacting a local travel agent, such as Pacific Travel Marketing, for do your internal flight arrangement.

This is typical of my experience in dealing with smaller airlines of 3rd world countries. Ive found that you need to make a phone call to te airline or else deal with a travel agent to effect any bookings.

Airlines Tonga seems to be some semi-detached subsidiary of Fiji Air. The main handling agents in Nuku'alofa are Teta Tours & Travels, and this is the booking method (from overseas) that worked for me earlier this year. I had previously found it impossible and frustrating, until Sandra Gros (Adventure Backpackers, Vava'u) advised me of this -- and it worked just fine.

Telephone Teta Tours & Travels during their office hours at +676 22473 and ask for Evalini. If she is not there ask when she returns, keep trying until you speak to her; she seems about the only person who can handle these bookings. Then she should be able to take your reservation over the phone, and put it into the Amadeus reservation system. If you tell her your email address she will arrange for the Amadeus system to email you the booking reference -- it will arrive from

"TETA TOURS & TRAVEL SERVICES (AGENTID01215748)" <emailserver@pop3.amadeus.net>

as a full airline booking (listed as "Air Fiji", they clearly hook into their system) -- but that is not an email you can reply to.

She CANNOT accept payment for the reservation (or could not earlier this year) as they could not accept credit cards. So the deal is: you get given this confirmed reservation with ref number, and then when you arrive in Nuku'alofa you go round to Teta Travels (near the centre, Corner of Wellington and Railway Roads), ask for Evalini, pay CASH (Tongan tala) for the tickets and they are issued to you on the spot. Allow an hour or two for this (...on Pacific time ...) but basically it works just fine! It looks like the reservation will be held for you pretty much up till day of flight, provided you then pay for the ticket at Teta Tours (not at the airport).

I expect some of the other Tongan travel agents may be able to arrange this (and also possibly accept credit cards) -- but I think they are then dealing with Teta Travel on your behalf. It works just fine if you deal with them direct, as above.
